ADOPT A CHURCH AND RISE AGAINST HUNGER
Today I am sharing with you a worthy cause that I would like you to support with a donation, however small. This concerns an annual program adopted by my church-Mt. Moriah SDA Church in Ridgewood, Queens. New York. Mt. Moriah is a small church with a big heart. We teamed up with the company, formerly known as STOP HUNGER NOW, now known as RISE AGAINST HUNGER, to feed those who are hungry all over the world and in the US. The program takes team work and it is well coordinated.
HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS:
As a church or other entity you select the amount of meals you want to pack for families and you enter into a formal agreement with RISE AGAINST HUNGER. You choose a date for the event, you pay for the meals and you host the food packaging event. Mt. Moriah, years ago, started with the packaging of 5,000 meals to serve families. Each packet can serve an entire family so 5,000 packets can serve a lot of hungry individuals. The church asks for volunteers, including church members and members of the Ridgewood community, and anyone who would like to participate, to come on that day and pack the meals. The first meal packaging event was so well received that for the second event we decided to package 10,000 meals! This was so successful that the next year we decided to do 20,000 meals but it was split into two events for the year, in May and in September.
Other churches have seen what Mt. Moriah is doing and they too are planning to host similar events in future. It is our hope that this fire that has been kindled will grow and more and more people will get on board, whether they give of their time or of their means to support this worthwhile project.
The first date this year for our meal packaging events is just a few weeks away-May 21, 2017 and we have signed an agreement to package 10,000 meals on that date. Year after year we have taken on this worthwhile project in faith, getting funding wherever we can. The church has made contributions, our local conference has contributed at different times, and we have had a host of loyal friends of Mt. Moriah and other supporters who love what we are doing and want to be a part of this worthwhile effort.
NEW AND UPCOMING PROJECTS:
This year we have quite a few new, local projects that we are funding that will directly impact our community, such as our Community Gardening Project and Pop up Kitchen project to provide a pathway to wellness, well-being, and worth through proper, wholesome nutrition. This involves, among other projects, the creation of a community organic vegetable garden and the creation of a Pop-Up Kitchen. We already have in place a thriving bread program that provides bread to those in need in the community.
As we grow as a church, we are excited to impact our community and beyond as we bring the good news of a risen Savior who cares for us on all levels, including physically, mentally and spiritually. You are welcome to adopt us as a church and partner with us in our efforts. We have a growing list of FRIENDS OF MT. MORIAH. You can be one too!
